Learning Assistant (LA) Success Stories
Graduate Student
Bhargavi Teki (she/her)
Bhargavi Teki, also known as "Teki," served as a Learning Assistant (LA) for STAT 100 and STAT 310 (Statistics) and as Communications Lead for the STEM LAB from Spring 2020 to Fall 2022. She graduated in Spring 2023 with a B.S. in Computer Science.
Teki is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering at the University at Buffalo.
Teki says, “CSUEB has some wonderful resources available to students, and one of them is the STEM LAB, which is a great place to go if you need any help with STEM classes and peer mentorship. They have an open community that welcomes everyone to join on their journey to encourage learning, develop resources for STEM students, and have fun while you’re at it."
Higher Education
Samantha Bustamante (she/her)
Samantha served as a Learning Assistant (LA) for MATH 115E (College Algebra) in the STEM LAB from Fall 2020 to Fall 2023. She graduated in Fall 2023 with a B.S. in Computer Science.
Samantha is the MESA College Prep Program Coordinator at Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV, where she and her team make a significant impact by engaging local middle and high school students in STEM exploration. Through engaging STEM-based competitions, they cultivate curiosity and motivate students to pursue STEM majors in college.
Samantha says, “The STEM LAB program was a transformative experience that strengthened my passion for education and mentorship. As a Learning Assistant, I developed essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and time management while guiding students through their STEM journey. This experience not only enriched my own learning but also inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to empowering and mentoring the next generation of students."
Industry
Litzy Juarez Serrano (she/her)
Lizty served as a Learning Assistant (LA) for MATH 130 (Calculus) and MATH 120/125 (Pre-Calculus) in the STEM LAB from Fall 2021 to Spring 2024. She graduated in Spring 2024 with a B.S. in Biochemistry.
Litzy is currently an Academic Graduate Appointee at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, training and learning more about various aspects of science and research.
LItzy says, “This program was highly influential in my education and I know it was equally as important to others as well. Being able to have a program like this at CSUEB benefits many students academically and careerwise, making it an invaluable program on campus."
Nursing
Femi Omole (he/him)
Femi was a Statistics LA for the STEM LAB (previously known as the Math Lab) during the first year: Fall 2018 - Spring 2019. He graduated in Spring 2019 with a B.S. in Health Sciences: Pre-Clinical Preparation. While at CSUEB, he prepared a literature review on “Chronic Conditions Among the Elderly Increases the U.S. Total Healthcare Costs”, conducted research on “Policies in Battling the Opioid Epidemic”, and created a Policy Map on “Colon Cancer Rates for African-Americans in Alameda County”. He is currently a Senior Behavior Therapist at ABA Plus Inc. and a Registered Nursing student at Los Medanos College. He will be graduating with his R.N. in Spring 2023.
Femi says, “The Math Lab was a happy place for many including myself. It was my go-to hangout spot and I was always there whether I was tutoring or not. I am so glad to have been a part of it!”
Industry
Sunshine Balingit (she/they)
Sunshine was a Math LA for the STEM LAB (previously known as the Math Lab) from Spring 2020 - Fall 2020. She graduated in Fall 2020 with a B.S. in Computer Science. While at CSUEB, she participated in her first hackathon where she stayed on campus for 24 hours and learned a lot from the experience! She is currently a Security System Administrator at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where she manages who has access to systems, improves methods of authentication, and revamps the system for better threat detection.
Sunshine says, “Not only did the Math Lab become my family, they prepared me for my future. I got to see the diversity of learning and teaching styles and find ways to work together. They have given me an understanding of what having a community is like and an opportunity to meet various unique personalities and backgrounds.”
