New Students to Accessibility Services

Accessibility Services (A.S.) welcomes the diversity that those with disabilities bring to the CSU Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV community. This includes students, faculty, and staff helping to create an inclusive academic environment that promotes dignity, reduces stigma, and encourages self-advocacy for individuals with disabilities. The purpose of accommodations is to provide equal access to classroom programs and campus activities in a manner consistent with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), associated California laws and regulations, and CSU policy.

If you have a temporary disability (i.e., broken extremity, other injury, pregnancy, or illness) that may last from a few weeks to a semester, you may be eligible for academic accommodations. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 ("Title IX"), 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq., is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex - including pregnancy and parental status - in educational programs and activities. Read more about the Department of Education's policies regarding pregnancy here. Please contact our office to schedule a Welcome Meeting with an accessibility counselor.

Some examples of academic accommodations, based upon a student's individual needs, may include the following:

Students requesting academic accommodations must first meet with an accessibility counselor for a Welcome Meeting. This initial meeting provides the opportunity to understand the student’s disability experience and to identify strategies and accommodations that have been successful in providing academic access. No formal documentation is needed to schedule this initial Welcome Meeting. However, documentation such as medical records, psychoeducational testing and school records (such as an IEP or 504 Program) may be necessary during this meeting to help guide our conversation and provide information about your accommodation needs. If this type of documentation is available, please provide it upon making a Welcome Meeting or bring it with you on the day of your Welcome Meeting.

To schedule your Welcome Meeting, please reach out to us at either 510-885-3868 or as@csueastbay.edu and provide us with your information. You will have the opportunity to send any medical documentation, reports, IEPs, etc. when doing so. Alternatively, you may do so in person.

Although we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible, you can certainly do so at any point in your academic career (including the admissions process) if you experience any disability-related barriers.

An example of such barriers may be when students are struggling in their classes and receiving poor grades, no matter how hard they try. In this case, it might be a good idea to undergo a learning disability assessment. Click here for more information.
