Cal State Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV MESA College Prep Program is one of the first pre-college STEM programs in the U.S. to earn accreditation for its progress in broadening opportunity for Black, Latina/o/e and Indigenous students in STEM from Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. The program, led by the Institute for STEM Education, earned the certification for its documented success in providing meaningful out-of-school programming that preliminary data show increases participation in STEM for underrepresented students.
“One of our central goals is to remove barriers for the students we serve to attend and be successful in college,” said Bruce Simon, director of the Institute for STEM Education. “Accreditation is important to our students because it validates that the work they are doing is preparatory for college and increases their chances of being admitted to their dream schools.”
The Cal State Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV MESA College Prep Program supports students to develop their confidence, competence and love of STEM by building a community that fosters curiosity and exploration. The program assists Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV middle and high school students, who have been historically excluded in STEM fields, to excel in math and science and go on to college in math-based majors.
“The application process included validating the quality of our program and using data to demonstrate that African American and Latino students who participate in our program are much more likely to persist in STEM once they matriculate to college,” said Simon.
As a member of the , a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research project, Cal State Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV MESA was part of the inaugural cohort completing a rigorous self-study followed by a site visit from MSA-CESS.
“This accreditation credential recognizes a diverse array of intensive STEM programs that engage Black, Latina/o/e and Indigenous youth through equity-centered practices in ways that collectively increase their visibility and value through the college admissions and enrollment process,” said Disan Davis, research associate and accreditation lead for the STEM PUSH Network.
STEM PUSH Pre-College Stem Programs are established, intensive, STEM-focused, out-of-school-time programs intentionally serving Black, Latina/o/e, Indigenous and other underrepresented racially minoritized high schoolers through practices that center equity and prepare students for undergraduate STEM. These programs provide more than 100 hours of programming using rigorous curricula reflective of advances in their various STEM fields.
Preliminary data across the STEM PUSH Network show that students who participate in STEM PUSH programs enroll and persist in STEM at significantly higher rates than those who do not.
