Cal State Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV was recently named to the . Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, this federal recognition began in 2006 to acknowledge institutions that commit to community involvement, service learning and civic engagement.
This is the first time CSUEB has been listed on the honor roll, however, the university has long maintained a culture of service learning and community engagement.
Beginning in the 1990s, the California State University system began to recognize the value of community engagement as a way to meet the state’s educational needs, while also teaching civic skills and offering students the opportunity to apply knowledge. CSUEB hired Mary D'Alleva in 2001 to serve as the director of the then-Service Learning Program, which became the Center for Community Engagement in 2013.
The CCE at CSUEB now works to support community-engaged teaching and learning, and foster community partnerships. It also hosts a service learning leadership program and collaborates with other campus entities to support quality community engagement experiences for students and community partners.
D’Alleva said being included on the President’s Honor Roll is a celebration of CSUEB faculty, students and community partners.
“The national recognition marks the impact and strength of these collaborations in making a positive difference within our region,” she said.
According to the California State University Chancellor’s Office, 13 CSU campuses in addition to Cal State Â鶹ÃÛÌÒAV were included on the honor roll this year.
